Lot 98:
Propoganda speech in Portuguese by a Catholic priest at an auto-da-fé, in which Jewish Marranos were burned at the stake. Lisbon, Valente de Oliveira. 1664. [7], 58 pp., 19 cm.
Prior to the public burning, the priest would deliver a fiery oratory, in which he called upon the victims to “confess” to their crime, which would allow them to put to death by choking rather than by fire. Here is the address of Cristovão de Almeida, of the San Augustino church in Lisbon. He tried to prove that the Messiah has already arrived, and that the lowly status of the Jews is proof that their G-d has deserted them. Finally, he prays for their “salvation.” The auto-da-fe took place in the courtyard of the palace of King Alfonso VI, on 17 August 1664.
The book is in very good condition with water stains.
