Bronze Medal for Jewish Children. Belgium, by Josine Souweine (1899-1983). 1945. Diameter: 60mm.
On one side is a mother feeding her three children around a table, with the legend: “Heureux Celui Qui A Pitie Des Afflices, 1942-1944.” The legend in French is from Proverbs, XIV, 21: “He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor [afflicted], happy is he.” The reverse side has a Star of David at the bottom, and the legend: ‘Les Enfants Juifs,’ with a name: Mme E. Zinsen. The medal was struck for presentation to individuals and institutions that hid Jewish children from the German occupying forces during World War II.
In very fine condition, and rare.
