Colour Publicity Poster of Yeshivat‭ '‬Etz Chaim‭' ‬in Jerusalem‭ - ‬Circa 1910

A large poster promoting the support and building campaign of the Etz Chaim Yeshiva in Jerusalem, with many photographs. Jerusalem, Solomon press. Circa 1910. 48 x 62 cm.

The poster is printed in several colors and the inscriptions are written in Hebrew, Yiddish and English with 15 pictures. In the center is a border with a large photograph of the students with their teachers, alongside a picture of R. Shmuel Salant. Other photographs feature the buildings of the institution, and disciples praying at the Western Wall and Tomb of Rachel. The inscriptions are in red and blue. The entire poster is bordered with colorful floral decoration.

Etz Chaim was founded in 1841 as the first Talmud Torah in Jerusalem, by the Rabbi of Jerusalem, R. Shmuel Salant. Over time, it grew to include a yeshiva for high school age and post-high school age boys and a kollel for married students. In 1857, it moved to the courtyard of the Churvat R’ Yehuda HaChassid synagogue. In the early 1900s, under the directorship of R. Yechiel Michel Tikutchinsky, it experienced a period of tremendous growth. A large plot of land was purchased on Jaffa Road and large and impressive buildings were built. This poster was a promotion for the support and building campaign of those years. The photograph of R. Shmuel Salant in the center is the only one ever taken of him, as he refused to be photographed, with the only exception made in this case, for the support of Etz Chaim.
