Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch. Printed in the center of the title page is an illustration of the Temple
This work was published by the author’s grandson, R. Shneur Zalman, son of R. Menachem Mendel, one of the leading figures of the Chabad community of Hebron, with financial support from Sir Abdullah Sassoon and his brothers, in honor and memory of their father David Sassoon. In the publisher’s preface, there is an extensive report on his travels as an emissary to foreign countries for the Kollel Chabad organization, and of his meetings with the members of the Sassoon family, which eventually led to the printing of this work. Also in the preface, he extends gratitude to R. Nathan Adler of London [Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom] and to Sir Moses Montefiore. Aside from the large illustrations of the Temple site and another at the end of the book, adorning the volume are many decorative motifs in the Bak Press style.
With owner’s signatures in a square hand: “the young Chaim son of R. Menashe Sutton ob”m, of pure Sephardi lineage.” R. Chaim Sutton authored Eretz HaChaim, printed in Jerusalem in 1908, about the laws and customs of Eretz Israel. He was born in Safed in 1871, and at age 30 was appointed as Rabbi of the Sephardic community of the city. He passed away in 1916. Written on the inside cover, but partially erased: Belongs to the Gaon … son of the Gaon … grandson of the true Gaon … our Master Shmuel Salant …
In very good condition, although lacking the initial title page. The boards are detached.
