Three receipts of the Etz Chaim Yeshiva in Jerusalem, with the signatures of R. Isser Zalman Meltzer. 1941–1951.

Two of the receipts were issued in 1941, and come from a receipt book. The third receipt was issued to R. Yitzchak Isaac Herzog, Chief Rabbi of Palestine, who forwarded a sizable donation to Etz Chaim from a tzedakah fund he administered. This receipt was printed tastefully in colored ink on a sheet with pictures of R. Shmuel of Salant and of the new building of the Yeshiva.

On the reverse is a list of the benfits rewarded to donors, written in Yiddish and English.

R. Isser Zalman Meltzer was born in Mir in 1870 and was a Rosh Yeshiva in Slobodka. Later he moved to Slutsk where he was the Rabbi and Rosh Hayeshiva. In 1925 he moved to Jerusalem to take up the position of Rosh Hayeshiva of the Etz Chaim yeshiva, leaving his son-in-law R. Aharon Kotler to head his yeshiva in Lithuania. R. Isser Zalman wrote the series Even HaEzel on Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah.
