This is the first publication dealing with the Dead Sea Scrolls. Prof. Sukenik of Hebrew University was the first scholar to research the scrolls and his initial findings are published here. In his introduction, the author describes the difficult conditions he had to work under as the War of Independence was raging. He dedicates this work to the memory of those who fell in battle, among them his son. Both surveys include photographs and facsimiles of fragments of the scrolls. This is the first and exceedingly rare publication of this historical discovery.

The Dead Sea Scrolls, otherwise known as the Judean Desert Scrolls, or the Qumran Scrolls, were discovered in a cave in Qumran in the Judean Desert and nearby sites in the Dead Sea area during the years 1947–1956. Their discovery is considered the most significant archaeological find in Israel in modern times. They have much historical and religious value. In section two, Prof. Sukenik relates the entire story of the exciting discovery.
