Military newspapers of the Allied Countries bearing headlines announcing the end of the war in Europe. All the papers include news stories and photographs of the war.
1. UNION JACK – EVENING SPECIAL, a daily newspaper of the British Armed Forces, special evening edition, May 8, 1945.
The edition appeared on the day of the German surrender (VE Day) with the headline: “BIG THREE PROCLAIM VICTORY IN EUROPE ” with a photograph of Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin.
2. UNION JACK SPECIAL EDITION – WESTERN ITALY EDITION, from May 8, 1945.
This edition appeared on the day of the German surrender (VE Day) with the headline: “GERMANY: THE END. ”
3. THE STARS AND STRIPES MEDITERRANEAN – VICTORY DAY SPECIAL, the newspaper of the United States Armed Forces stationed in the Mediterranean Sea region, from May 8, 1945.
This edition appeared on the day of the German surrendered (VE Day) with the headline: “IT ’S OVER OVER HERE. ”
4. TIME Magazine from May 12, 1945. This was a special abridged edition, printed in Italy for the American soldiers stationed around the Mediterranean.
The magazine cover features three Allied soldiers holding up their flags, and the caption: ‘THE BIG THREE – ONE JOB DONE.’ The entire issue is dedicated to the victory. There is also a photograph of survivors of the Buchenwald concentration camp.
