A nickel medallion issued in honor of Sir Moses Montefiore. [London 1884.] Diameter: 4 cm. Weight: 23 gr.
This medallion was minted in honor of Sir Moses Montefiore’s hundredth birthday, and dated 27 October 1884 – 5645. Jews worldwide celebrated Sir Moses Montefiore’s hundredth birthday, and his friends and admirers issued this coin in honor of the occasion. Montefiore’s image is engraved on one side of the medallion, surrounded by the following inscription (in Hebrew): “Fortunate is the God-fearing [man] who walks in His ways – 5645 years since Creation.” An English inscription, and a list of the countries in which he was active, appears on the other side of the medallion: “A universal tribute of respect and esteem to Sir Moses Montefiore bart philanthropist from his admirers and friends – centenary 27th October 1884 – Holy Land, Egypt, Damascus, Constantinople, Russia, Poland, Rome, Morocco, Roumania.”
