Lot 70:
Photograph album depicting the destruction of Polish Jewry, by Gershon Taffet, published by the Polish Central Historical Committee. Lodz. December 1945. [21], 104, [15] leaves. 32 x 23 cm.
The album has 104 pages of photographs, with 252 pictures documenting all the phases of the Polish Holocaust, from the Nazi invasion of Poland until the liberation in 1945. Some of the pictures are extremely horrifying. The pictures are printed on special paper. At the back of the album is a list with the explanation of every picture in Polish and English.
The album is prefaced by introductions in Yiddish, Russian, French, Hebrew, Polish and English. On each page, alongside the photographs are likewise captions in these six languages. The publishers write in their foreword of their intention to publish more such volumes, an ambition that does not seem to have been realized. This is very likely the first comprehensive photographic documentation of the Holocaust.
The album is in good condition, with stains, in a hard-cover binding with the original black wrapper with the book’s name printed in English and Polish, pasted on the binding.
