Lot 125:
Abridged School and Family Bible, by Jacob Levi Levinski, New York. 1871. Four sections: VI, [1], 131, [3], 132–291, [3], 292–413, [2], [3], 36 [actually 33], 23 [actually 33], XII pp., 23 cm.
The work was written for children and schools. It is a compendium of the five Books of Moses, with an English translation on facing pages and with parallel pagination. Each section has a separate title page, including the section of the apocrypha. It was a very important work, and one of the first Hebrew bibles printed in the United States, subsequently reprinted several times. Printing of this edition began in 1869. Sections one and two were printed immediately. The other two were completed only in 1871, followed by a reprinting of the first two sections. This book is very rare, especially in this condition.
In excellent condition with handsome margins.
