Lot 138:
De Vijf Rollen – the Five Scrolls ‘with translation and commentary in the language of our land, ’ by J. Vredenburg. Amsterdam, J.L. Joachimsthal press. [1899]. 20 cm.
The five megillot with translation and expanded commentary in Dutch. Each scroll has its own title page.
With handwriting on the flyleaf in nice letters: ‘by … Yehuda son of R. Meir, cantor of the community of Hilversum, ’ by which we know that the book belonged to the cantor of Hilversum. The Jewish community of Hilversum was established in the late 18th century. It was a resort area, and boasted a Jewish hospital alongside a synagogue and other Jewish institutions. In 1930, the Jewish population peaked at 1,000 and then began to decline. Fifteen years ago only 40 Jews lived there. Today there are no regular prayer services in the synagogue, only on the High Holidays (see enclosed material on the community).
In very good condition, in its original red gold-embossed cover.
