R. Akiva Eiger

Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah, with the novellae of R. Akiva Eiger. Konigsberg. 1859. Two volumes: [5], 260: [1] 312 leaves, 38 cm.

This is the first edition of the novellae of R. Akiva Eiger on the Shulchan Aruch. The publisher, R. Nachman Avraham Goldberg received them from his father-in-law R. Binyamin Wolf Eiger, son of the author, who was very instrumental in publishing his father’s works. The novellae were copied from the margins of R. Akiva Eiger’s copy of the Shulchan Aruch. They are not printed in most standard editions of the Shulchan Aruch, but they were printed from a different edition from which most of the notes are missing. They include the notes of R. S. Eiger, son of R. Akiva Eiger, first edition. In our edition, the explanations of the Gr"a appear for the first time, along with their accompanying commentaries, as they are printed today.

With a beautifully illustrated frontispiece of an Aron Kodesh with menorahs on the sides and a bimah. The lithograph was done specifically for this copy, as seen by the title of this book and the commentaries that appear here, particularly those that are printed here for the first time. This title page is rare and unknown.

In excellent condition with the exception of the frontispiece which underwent professional restoration.

Vinograd, Konigsburg 239.
